In the complex, chaotic, challenging world of today, as has always been true, those with still, small or weak voices must be shielded from harm. That's why the core message of Citizen Voice is that citizens must be involved and the vulnerable must be protected. These include vulnerable persons - very young and very old, abused, impoverished, disabled - who often have quiet public voices and great difficulty protecting themselves. It also includes the other created components of our world - animals, plants, air, land and water - that likewise have no voice of their own or power to protect themselves. Ageless wisdom holds that how a society treats the most vulnerable is the truest measure of its character. True citizenship is not simply about advancing our own interests, but more honorably, protecting the interests of all…especially the vulnerable.
Who are the vulnerable today? Child slaves, illegally trafficked and slaughtered endangered animals, physically and emotionally abused frail elderly, deeply affected victims of disasters, and more. They are quietly all around us, often in the shadows.
Citizen Voice is not at its heart an organization, but a nonpartisan movement of people tired of politics and government perceived as frequently dominated by self-interest and seen as increasingly detached from impact by the average citizen. It is also a movement that believes that positive change is, in fact, possible in the public arena - an arena that includes politics, government, academia, and the media - the arena where societal values are displayed and debated, priorities set, and choices made that deeply affect average citizens and their everyday lives as well as the fate of the most vulnerable. It is also a movement that recognizes that a public arena adrift from its moorings of collective integrity, compassion and wisdom will leave the vulnerable in its wake - struggling, unnoticed, not properly protected. Finally, it is a movement that is willing to say and stand for these things...courageously.
Our mission is to inspire, inform and involve citizens in the public arena on behalf of all, especially the vulnerable. Citizen Voice fulfills its mission by involving citizens in both practical immediate intervention and work towards long-term changes that protect the vulnerable. This enables citizens to make a genuine difference, both immediately and long-term. It also refocuses our societal attention on our foundational principles, and those of every honorable nation - liberty and justice for all - a paradigm shift that brings the best of our past to bear on the worst of our present. It elevates the notion of proper stewardship of one's life and our collective blessings to its proper historic role. It is a fundamental reorientation in the public arena. It makes us proud...and our nation whole. It is the best of who we are...and who we want to be.
